Is a FIAT 500X Abarth Coming Soon?

If you follow the chatter in the automotive world you may have heard the rumor that FIAT is looking to grow their Abarth line. Currently the only FIAT model available in the Abarth version is the original 500. However, FIAT recently announced plans to make its upcoming 124 Spider roadster also available as an Abarth, thus sparking the 500X Abarth rumors.

What qualifies a FIAT as an Abarth model? Simply put, performance. The FIAT 500 Abarth is a much higher performance version of the original 500. The idea behind creating a performance 500X is where skeptics to the rumor step in.  While increasing the performance in the 500X isn’t an impossible task, the job will be much easier in Europe than the US.

The European version of the 500X features 138 horsepower produced by a 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.  In contrast, the U.S. version of the 500X features a 2.4-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower.

While FIAT has not made any official statement on producing a FIAT 500X Abarth, the brand seems to be moving in that direction. With a plan to produce a 124 Abarth already in place, the next logical step would a 500X Abarth. Creating a 500X Abarth would give Fiat the complete three-model lineup it has reportedly been searching for.
