FIAT Revives An American Classic: The 2017 FIAT 124 Spider

Warning: You may not recognize this stylish new FIAT. Since the Italian car makers return to the United States in 2011 the only body style available stateside has been the classic FIAT compact we all know and love. All that is about to change. This week at the Los Angeles Auto Show FIAT unveiled a stunning new roadster that will be hitting American streets next summer.

The all-new 2017 124 Spider is a rebirth of the original 1966 Spider designed by the legendary Pininfarina studio. The 2017 124 Spider will pay homage to its past with the twist of modern technology and will be the first vehicle resulting from the FIAT partnership with Mazda.

The 214 Spider is powered with a fuel injected, turbocharged 1.4-liter engine that FIAT builds in Italy. Producing 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque with either a manual or automatic six-speed transmission.

The FIAT roadster will features a unique fabric convertible top along with a number of interior technology features. Driver’s can expect to see 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity and a Bose premium sound system. The sound system will feature 9 speakers, with two placed directly in the headrests so users can hear even with the top down. The FIAT will also have amenities like heated seats.

Unlike many sport cars on the market, the FIAT roadster is taking a cue from its SUV competitors when it comes to safety features. The 214 Spider will come equipped with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection and a rear backup camera.

Pricing has yet to be released for the 2017 214 Spider, but FIAT has announced it will be released in the summer of 2016 as a 2017 model. As an ode to its name, the first 124 units will be sold as limited-edition Prima Edizione Lusso models with blue exterior paint and a brown leather interior.
